Opalescent glass traditionally consists of a proportion of transparent glass and opaque white glass. In the finished sheet, the proportion of opaline white determines how transparent or dense the opalescent glass appears. If you look at the cut edge of an opalescent glass pane, you can often clearly see the individual layers which, when viewed through the pane or from above, simply appear as coloured opal.
